Money no one can freeze sounds like the whole answer — but “crypto” isn’t one thing, and most of it is more visible than cash, not less. This isn’t a nudge to buy any of it; it’s an honest map of the trade-offs, by who can watch a payment and who can stop it.

How to read this. Custodial means a company holds your coins — it can freeze them, must verify your identity (KYC), and reports your sales to the IRS on Form 1099-DA. Self-custody means you hold the keys and no one can freeze them; the risk moves to metadata — by default the wallet’s node can tie your IP address to your addresses. Private by default means the tool routes over Tor, mixes, or uses a privacy coin so that link is closed from the start. KYC and Reports to IRS are the two chokepoints: once one identity checkpoint links you to an address, chain-analysis firms can follow it across the public ledger. Two things worth stating plainly — holding privacy tools and privacy coins is legal, and self-custody is not tax invisibility: taxable events are reportable however you hold. Open source is whether the wallet’s code is public and independently auditable — the difference between a privacy property you can check and one you take on faith; “Partial” means only some parts are open. Can freeze restates custody as the stake it really is: a company holding your keys can freeze or seize the balance, while keys you hold yourself cannot be frozen by anyone. On-chain privacy is the ledger underneath — Bitcoin and Ethereum are permanently public and traceable, Monero is shielded by default, and a CoinJoin breaks the trail. Reproducible builds asks whether anyone can rebuild the app from source and get the exact published binary — the check that turns “open source” from a promise into something you can verify; “—” marks tools with no client to build (custodial services and closed-source apps). Privacy features are the on-chain privacy tools the wallet itself provides — Silent Payments and PayJoin (Bitcoin), CoinJoin mixing, coin control, Litecoin MWEB, or Monero’s native shielding and subaddresses; “—” marks tools that offer none of their own, such as bare hardware signers and custodial services. Telemetry is what the app collects about your usage, separate from the chain and the network, read from its App Store and Google Play data disclosures; ‘—’ marks a service with no dedicated app to read — a web-only platform, a category of many independent operators, or a brokerage security. Network control is whether you can route over Tor or point the wallet at your own node, or are locked to a default server or RPC that can log your IP alongside your addresses; it restates, at a glance, the exposure spelled out in ‘Who can see it.’ The small numbers link each claim to a primary source in Sources & notes below. Trust Wallet — closed-source app. The Android app was moved to closed-source development by its maintainer and is distributed under a proprietary license (only the separate Wallet Core library is open source), so the published binary cannot be rebuilt from source.   31. Custodial exchange and payment apps — identity-linked telemetry. Because these services verify customer identity (KYC; see note 2), the usage data their apps collect is tied to a verified identity rather than being anonymous.   32. CoinJoin availability (2024–2026). CoinJoin combines several users’ coins in one transaction to break chain-analysis links. The coordinator landscape narrowed sharply in 2024: zkSNACKs discontinued the Wasabi coordinator on 1 June 2024, so Wasabi now depends on independent third-party coordinators and blocks U.S. participants; Trezor Suite removed its CoinJoin feature entirely (it had relied on the zkSNACKs coordinator); and Sparrow removed its Whirlpool integration (v1.9.0) after the Samourai service was seized.   33. Silent Payments, PayJoin, and MWEB. Silent Payments (BIP-352) let a wallet publish one reusable address while a fresh on-chain address is derived for each payment, giving receivers strong privacy; PayJoin (BIP-78, and the newer v2 / BIP-77) is a collaborative send that breaks the common-input-ownership heuristic; MWEB is Litecoin’s confidential-transaction layer. Cake Wallet was the first mobile wallet to ship both Silent Payments and PayJoin v2 and an early cross-platform MWEB wallet; Sparrow supports receiving Silent Payments with a compatible server, and BitBox02 supports sending to them.   38. Lightning — on-chain footprint and routing metadata. Lightning moves payments off-chain, but opening and closing a channel are ordinary Bitcoin transactions recorded on-chain, and channels are announced to the network, so their funding UTXOs are identifiable; payment routing is onion-encrypted, yet node metadata — and a node’s IP address, without Tor — can still leak.
